As well as offering one to one counselling, I am also a trained couples counsellor. I offer couples counselling to couples, married or partners. I also see other combinations; mother and adult child, father and adult child and family groups. I work with people who are finding their relationship difficult.
Couples come to the sessions together. It is important that I do not take sides or offer solutions but offer a space which helps each person to ‘hear’ and understand the other. I listen carefully to each person to understand their position, it can at times help for me to communicate each person’s feelings to the other in a way that each can non-defensively hear. The counselling sessions can help couples to understand each other better. It may be that past relationship difficulties have created defences that can be explored in a supportive environment. Or it may be that one person feels that the relationship is coming to an end, whilst the other may want to work through any problems. As a couples-counsellor I will value both positions without trying to guide the relationship in either direction. I will try hard to ensure that each person feels genuinely heard and understood by their partner. It may well be that people come to the sessions unsure of what they want for the future. I aim to create an environment which feels safe and supportive so that each partner can explore this and come to a clearer understanding in their own minds.
If you and your partner would like more information or if you would like to come and meet me to explore if these sessions may be of help, please get in touch.
